B-cycle Launches iPhone App to Complement its Digital Ecosystem

DENVER – May 25, 2010 – With the launch of Denver B-cycle on April 22, B-cycle not only became the first citywide bike-sharing system in the U.S., it also changed the face of bike-sharing as the rest of the world has come to know it. Now, with the launch of the B-cycle iPhone app, boundaries are pushed all the way to users’ pockets making useful information available on the go.

“This is just one more reason to join Denver B-cycle today. While bike-sharing has been part of the European city landscape for many years, B-cycle is the first city wide system developed in the United States. As such, we had the opportunity to design it for today’s consumers needs and provide a fully integrated digital ecosystem for our users that combines web and mobile services. Check it out on www.bcycle.com. The addition of the iPhone app, which allows users to search for stations around Denver as well as availability of bikes and docks at each station, was an obvious next step,” says Bob Burns, President of B-cycle.

B-cycle system features include monitoring of personal fitness by keeping track of mileage and calories burned. It also calculates the reduction in carbon emissions accomplished by biking rather than driving and allows members to connect with each other online through popular social networks like Facebook and Twitter.

“The B-cycle system provides the user with a seamless integration between the bike computer, kiosk hardware and Web services. In the coming months, the applications open source API’s will be released to the public and at that time we hope to see other developers create new B-cycle applications for the iPhone as well as applications for other smart phones,” says Burns.

The Denver B-cycle system, owned and operated by non-profit Denver Bike Sharing, includes approximately 400 B-cycles at 42 B-stations around the city, offering a green alternative to cars for short commutes and errands. To check out bikes, residents and tourists can register for 24-hour, 7-day, 30-day or annual memberships on the B-cycle Web site (www.denver.bcycle.com).  Residents and tourists can also purchase a 24-hour membership at any B-cycle station throughout Denver.
